Horror: The campus was put on lockdown as news of the shooting broke
The male suspect is said to be "under control" but not arrested as police continue to sweep the buildingAn American university is currently on lockdown after a gunman opened fire shooting one person dead.
Armed police raced to the Wayne Community College campus in Goldsboro, North Carolina, after receiving frantic 911 calls saying the man was stolen the loose.
"This is not a drill. The entire campus is under lockdown," said university officials.
Goldsboro City Manager Scott Stevens, said one person was fatally shot.
"The identity of the victim and the status of the search for a suspect have not yet been confirmed," the school’s website said.
olice SWAT teams are still on site this afternoon and although the suspect has not yet been arrested, Tara Humphries, Wayne Community College said police have one suspect "under control".
Fire Marshall Brian Taylor numerous law enforcement departments had responded to the scene and a manhunt was underway for the shooter.
Police confirmed one person had been shot in the “vicinity” of the campus library and said they are searching for a 5ft 11 inch tall bald white man.
The suspect was described as having a tattoo above his left eye, a goatee beard and wearing a blue jacket.
College President Kay Albertson said staff and student had been evacuated and "we've been told to pull back."
The broke in to the campus just before 9am.
Police warned the local community not approach the gunman who they said was extremely dangerous.
